    • [AT] HRBC Field Trip in Richmond - May 11, 2013

8:00 am - 11:00 am at Richmond's Belle Isle and James River Park System

Each May the James River rapids at Belle Isle near downtown Richmond offer a rich bounty of fish – and birds that feed on them. We'll loop up and down over the historic Isle on scenic, rocky, but well-established trails (the more intrepid will be free to boulder scramble, should they dare). Then we'll drive across the River and bird from the elevated platform near the 42nd Street entrance to the Park System; it allows close, canopy level views of warblers on tall trees. Our third stop will focus on the bird blinds at the Wetlands near the Pony Pasture Rapids yet further upstream. If time and energy permit, we'll conclude with a walk in Forest Hill Park, which has a pretty lake that's fed by a fast-moving, rocky stream. Bring lunch and snacks as the trip will run to mid-afternoon.

Meet 8:00 AM Saturday, 11 May 2013, in Richmond on Tredegar Road at the entrance to the Belle Isle footbridge.
Car pool forms at 7:00 AM behind Ranger Station in Newport News Park.

From I64 West, take exit 190 on the left to merge onto
      N 5th St toward Downtown/Coliseum/I-95 S/Petersburg.
Drive 1.4 miles on 5th Street toward James River.
Right turn onto Tredegar Street at River.
Park in rough lot where elevated rail line intersects bridge.

If you wish to attend this event, please contact Tom Charlock by phone (757-599-3418) or email (TomCharlock@gmail.com).

    • [AT] Rain Gardens with Master Gardeners - May 11, 2013

10:00 am - 11:00 am at New Quarter Park, 1000 Lakeshead Drive, Williamsburg

      May 11
      All About Rain Gardens
Master Gardeners were concerned about runoff from New Quarter Park’s parking lot to Queens Creek, so they built a rain garden to capture and clean it. Come see the rain garden and learn more about how and why you should
create one at home. Get tips on how to fill a low area with a variety of native plants that will absorb and infiltrate the water. Don’t let runoff create ugly eroded soil and polluted waterways.
In case of inclement weather, call 890-5840.

Everyone should bring his or her own bag dinner and beverage—this is not a potluck! If you do not want to bring your own dinner, there are a few fast food restaurants, grocery stores, and convenience stores nearby. Plan to eat between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.

If you have never taken this workshop, you must complete the classroom portion in order to become a certified Wildlife Mapper. We recommend that you participate in the outdoor portion, but it is not required for certification.

If you are already certified, you may participate in either or both portions. The more, the merrier! The workshop and outdoor practice sessions count as advanced training for all who participate.

7:30 am - 1:00 pm at WBC Field Trip

Field Trip to Beaverdam Park, Gloucester, May 18

      Category: Monthly Field Trips

On Saturday, 18 May, we will travel to Beaverdam Park for a bird walk through that great and varied habitat, to be led by Gloucester’s own George Harris. This is prime territory for warblers and other birds migrating through and nesting in our region, and no one knows this territory better than George! In addition to an exciting variety of birds commonly found there, the views along the trails we will travel are often breathtaking.

We will meet for carpooling and caravaning to Beaverdam in the Colony Square Shopping Center parking lot (on Jamestown Road, just south of the intersection with Rte 199) and depart at 7:30 am. For those choosing to meet us at Beaverdam Park in Gloucester, we will plan to arrive at the parking lot inside the main park entrance at about 8:30 AM. This should be a relaxed and pleasant bird walk in some of the most varied and productive habitat in our region. No cost to participate and no need to sign up—just come along! Hope you will plan to join us. For any further info needed or questions, feel free to call or email Geoff Giles at tylerandal2 @ aol.com

10:00 am - 12:00 pm at New Quarter Park, 1000 Lakeshead Drive, Williamsburg

Species Diversity of New Quarter Park and the Human Footprint
New Quarter Park is one of several locations in the area where Dr. Matthias Leu and his College of William and Mary biology students are collecting data on species diversity. They use scientific models and sampling techniques to collect data that will show how human structures like highways and buildings impact ecological systems. Leu has used similar models to aid conservation
efforts in other areas in the past and is plugging data collected here into a years-long database that is painting a picture of diversity in this region. The data helps scientists understand ecological system characteristic and leads
to their hypotheses on the impact of urbanization. At New Quarter Park, Leu and his students have been surveying six plots for birds, deer, butterflies, and vegetation. Come find out what he’s discovering about diversity at New
Quarter and walk with him over portions of the plots. Hear how New Quarter compares to the region and ask about his hypotheses.
