Patty Maloney harvests pine cones“The [Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists] is accepting applications for its annual six-month basic training session, which begins Aug. 30 and ends March 14. Training is 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays twice a month; occasional field trips are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. To join the chapter, you should live in the city of Williamsburg or Poquoson or counties of York, New Kent and James City. Cost is $150, which includes materials, instruction and chapter dues for 2011-’12; e-mail membership coordinator Shirley Devan at hrctraining@cox.net.

“Once you finish training, you need an additional eight hours of advanced training, plus 40 hours of volunteer service within a year, to qualify for state certification.”
