If you’re looking for something different you can contact the VCU Rice Center on Route 5 and they will give you all types of info on their work with tracking and revitalizing Sturgeon population in the James River. They will give you a tour of their facility and if you time it right you may see them capture and tag a sturgeon or 2.

Paddling during Sturgeon spring or fall spawning season is a great opportunity hopefully see these fish in the wild. Mid September tends to be the best time for viewing.
In 2021 this was done as a small group paddle, In 2025 Professor Matthew Balazik gave a talk- this year we will paddle, launching from Osborne Landing in Henrico
Ocborne Landing is a very good place to launch (no charge for kayaks) with plenty of parking, a fishing pier and restroom facilities.
Launch: Osborne Landing 9530 Osborne Turnpike, Richmond, VA 23231, USA (40 miles/ 50 minutes from Governors Land)
Lunch will likely be at Indian Fields Tavern or Culs Courthouse on the way back.
